COURSE SCHEDULE

For the summer of 2009, Industry Film School will be offering three boot camp courses. The courses are one week sessions starting July 6 through August 24. Students are eligible to enroll for additional boot camp sessions to continue their production experience throughout the summer. Each week is unique and introduces a student to new people, techniques and challenges in a production environment. All additional classes will be at a 10% discount.

      Each week is unique and introduces a student to new people, techniques and challenges in a production environment. Filmmakers take many years to perfect their craft and skills. These boot camps are an excellent environment for any student interested in beginning a career as a filmmaker or students just interested in learning more about making movies.

      Each day will consist of an intense training program that will have a student beginning to shoot their films on the second day of class. It is important that each student show up to class on time and be prepared for the day's events. For students enrolling for additional weeks, they have the opportunity to shoot additional footage and take additional time for editing.

All production equipment is provided for our students. If a student owns his or her own camera, they should feel free to bring it so they can get used to shooting with that camera. Equipment being supplied to our students includes professional digital and HD cameras as well as grip and lighting packages, field audio packages, monitors and non-linear editing systems.

    The filmmaking course gives students a chance to experience a variety of elements of a production. Whether a documentary or narrative filmmaker, our students leave the course prepared to handle any production.

     The INDUSTRY FILM SCHOOL designed this course to touch on as many aspects of the filmmaking field as possible. From script-writing to locations and directing to using gear, our students gain a strong understanding of the process. It takes time and practice to produce industry quality productions and our students gain the necessary skills that will allow them to continue creating and perfecting their craft.

     The filmmaking courses train students hands-on using a variety of cameras, audio, grip, and lighting gear. Each student will have the opportunity to write, direct, and shoot his or her own film.

Students will have access to the following:
    – Professional Digital Cameras
    – Audio package (fishpole, shotgun mic, XLR cables, mixer, recording device)
    – Grip Equipment (c-stands, sandbags, duvetyn, apple boxes, scrims, flags, and bounce board)
     – Lighting Kits (stands, lights, and gels)

     The workshops are designed as introductory courses preparing students to become proficient in various areas of production. Students will have the opportunity to create a project and gain the experience and skills necessary to continue a career in filmmaking.

Non-Linear Editing Boot Camp

     From day one, the non-linear course will immerse students into the fundamentals of digital editing using Final Cut Pro on the Apple platform. Students are trained how to organize, capture, import, cut, assemble, add effects, create titles and graphics, then finally export their finished product.

All non-linear editing workstations have similar functions and procedures. By learning the techniques used in this course, students will be able to edit on almost any edit workstation.

     This course is intended to familiarize our students with all the skills and techniques necessary to edit any project. We also cover the mastering process and finalizing the project to DVD.

Students are encouraged to bring their own footage on Mini-DV. The Industry Film School will provide all necessary footage if a student does not have their own footage. Each student will have access to their own workstation starting from day one.

Below is a course summary and a list of topics covered during the Fimmaking course.

Producing
Introduction to planning your film or video project. Includes a brief introduction to scheduling and budgeting your project. This pre-production process helps independent producers and filmmakers manage Budgeting, Scheduling, Crew, Expenses, and Locations.

Scriptwriting
Introduction to writing a script for a feature film, short film, documentary, or video project. We will show you both standard screenplay format for narrative films and audio/video scripts for documentaries and reality-type projects.

Storyboarding
Introduction to storyboarding for film, TV, and animation. Storyboarding is perhaps the single greatest saver of time and money for low-budget filmmakers. You will learn standard 3-panel pen and paper storyboarding and No artistic talent is required!

Cinematography
Introduction to cinematography including camera set-up, proper camera techniques, technical understanding of your camera, and differences between mini-DV, Super 8, 16MM, and 35MM film stock. You will practice the most popular camera shots such as close shot (CS), close-up (CU), extreme close-up (ECU), medium shot (MS), point-of-view shot (POV), and long shot (LS). You will learn low-budget techniques to mimic more expensive Hollywood productions.

We teach the class using 16mm film and 3-chip DV cameras such as the Arriflex, Aaton, Canon XL, Sony and the Panasonic DVX100 and HVX200.

Lighting and Sound
Introduction to proper lighting and sound design. You will learn standard 3-point lighting. You will learn how to use artificial lighting, natural lighting, and lighting for indoors, outdoors, day, and night. You will learn how to use shotgun mics, lavaliere mics, and boom mics. You will learn low-budget techniques to get fantastic results.

Directing
Introduction to directing your film. You will learn how to construct scenes - the building blocks of your project. You will learn how to work with individual actors and ensembles.

Legal Aspects and Distribution
Introduction to legal and financial aspects of filmmaking. You will learn about permissions and rights clearances, unions, distribution deals, and film festivals. Whether your expected budget is $1,000 to $1,000,000 you will leave the Industry Film School with all the skills necessary to make your project successful.
